SFOOTING - Analysis and Design of Spread Footings for Steel Lattice Towers

SFOOTING is a microcomputer-based (MS-WINDOWS) program for the analysis and design of reinforced concrete spread footing foundations subject to uplift-compression loading. Spread footings are typically used as foundations for steel latticed towers for transmission line and communication facilities. SFOOTING performs the geotechnical design of square spread footings for uplift, sliding with uplift, compression, and sliding with compression loading conditions. The program allows the user to specify safety factors for geotechnical design and provides default minimum values. The size of the square foundation designed by SFOOTING for geotechnical requirements can be used to size grillage foundations as well. SFOOTING also estimates the foundation displacement under the applied uplift and compression loads. The structural analysis and design of the pad portion of the spread footing is performed using the 1995 version of the American Concrete Institute (ACI 318-95) Code. SFOOTING also provides moment and shear forces in the pad (footing) for use in reinforced concrete design where codes other than the ACI code govern. SFOOTING provides values of the maximum axial, shear and moment loads in the foundation pedestal (stem) to be used for designing the reinforcement of the concrete pedestal.

All analysis and design assumptions are described in the User's Manual, which is available upon request. The user of SFOOTING enters all data interactively and the program generates and continuously updates a picture of your foundation. It supports a link to the TOWER program allowing foundation loads to be automatically determined based on structural analysis. SFOOTING produces a design instantaneously and can thus be used to quickly study the effects of changes in footing depth, safety factors, loads and material strength properties.

The program outputs the width of the square spread footing needed for geotechnical requirements and the area of reinforcing steel in the pad necessary to meet ACI requirements. In addition, shear and moment loads in the pad (footing) and pedestal (stem) are provided for the user to design the reinforcement in accordance with another governing code.

An analysis mode is also available in which SFOOTING evaluates the geotechnical capacity of a square footing of known depth and width, relative to the applied load. The analysis mode uses the ACI Code to determine the required area of reinforcing steel for comparison to the area of reinforcing steel provided.
